If you have some photo editing program you can try to edit a suitable ref photo by decreasing the number of colors to 4 (or how many colors you want to use. This would give you a guideline for where different shades would go.

β€ͺ@Mary_sketch‬ thanks! I don't know about making a tutorial since this was my first try at colored dot art. If you google "pointillism" I trust you would find some good ideas how it can be done. But for this work I chose a photo ref that has clear lights/shadows. Instead of black&white or natural colors I decided to use colors representing the levels of light/shadow. So in this case for shadows I chose blue and green and ligths are yellow and red.
